Improve your Reading and Writing skills so you can:
- Communicate better in a social or work environment?
- Read to children?
- Read for pleasure and/or knowledge?
- Upgrade your skills for your first job or a better job?
- Take on new international responsibilities at work or in your own business?
- Do better at school or training?
- Get more out of you leisure, hobby or special interest programs?
Could you benefit from literacy upgrading? You’re not alone!
According to the Federal Human Resources and Social Development Department’s website:
“At least 10 percent of the workforce is illiterate…..” “Literacy is not just a one-dimensional problem, but is many-facetted, evolving, changing, and growing more complex. We are going to be dealing with a lot of problems that are linked to literacy. Literacy will enable people to participate socially, culturally, politically and economically."
From The Province of Ontario website:
“Adult literacy is a serious issue in Ontario. The International Adult Literacy and Skills Survey found that 16 per cent of adults in the province of Ontario do not have basic literacy skills; an additional 26 per cent would benefit from literacy upgrading.”
For adults, The Tutor House uses the principles and practises learned in ongoing volunteer tutoring for the Durham Literacy Council.
The Tutor House has many teaching resources available, specialized dictionaries, tapes, books, software, textbooks, manuals and workbooks, fun learning material. The material is geared to age, for example, an adult would not work with children’s workbooks. Adults choose what they wish to work on; for example, understanding the Ontario written requirements for getting a driver’s licence.
